Between 2008 and 2010, Dzanc Books and its imprints, OV Books and Black Lawrence Press will publish no less than 21 short story collections. This is a staggering number in an industry where many publishing houseswill not publishmore than a single collection in any year. Dzanc's commitment to publishing great writing does not shy away from the short story and we are intent on extending our vision past 2010 with plans to publish many additional short story collections.
Dzanc is now receiving some 2000 submissions per year. With this in mind, we feel it is imperative to the process of publishing not only short story collections, but novels and literary nonfiction, that we alter our submission policy for unsolicited short story collections.
Beginning June 4, 2008, we are announcing the Dzanc Short Story Collection Contest. All authors wishing to submit a short story collection to Dzanc may do so, and will be judged collectively during the remainder of 2008. In January of 2009, we will announce the winner of our Dzanc SSC Contest and that author will be published by Dzanc in 2011 and receive a $1000 advance. Entry to the Dzanc SSC Prize will require a $20 reading fee, and a full manuscript sent via email to email@example.com. The entry fee can be made either via check made out to Dzanc Books, mailed to 1334 Woodbourne St., Westland, MI 48186 or via paypal by clicking on the button on this page.
Dzanc will still be looking for and considering specifically solicited short story collections. Our announcement regarding the Dzanc Short Story Contest concerns only unsolicited manuscripts. Ifwe've not rejected a story collection you currently haveon submission with us, you might want to consider submitting to ourcontest. If you strongly believe your workis the type of collection that Dzanc would be interested in, please feel free to enter and submit per the instructions above.
Welook forward to your submitting your work to our contest and if you've any further questions please contact us at:firstname.lastname@example.org
Thanks go out to the many of you who have already jumped on board with the idea that being published by Dzanc Books would be a good thing - our emails have been ringing with submissions since the website went live, and we look forward to searching through them for the manuscript(s) that excite us, that won't let us put it (them) down.
