I rarely simply link to other litblogs and their posts, but Chad at Three Percent has pulled off a coup of epic proportions. Karl Pohrt, owner of Shaman Drum Booksellers in Ann Arbor, MI, one of the very best booksellers in the world, is speaking at the Beijing Book Fair. Chad has convinced Karl to a) write some blog posts about his experiences once he's back, and b) to give him a preview of his speech.
That's what you'll find here, the speech Karl will be giving. Just read it and you'll understand why Shaman Drum is not one of the independent booksellers that has gone by the wayside over the past two decades, even in a city with a Borders Superstore across the street - that's right, not three blocks away, or on the other side of town - walk out the door at Shaman, go north about three buildings and look left and you'll see the Borders sign.
