Brown Paper Publishing recently published a collection of "twenty-nine short conversations" titled Listen by Corey Mesler. I've had the pleasure of reading a great deal of Corey's work over the past few years, much of it in chapbook form, and this book is fantastic as it's as good or better than what he's been publishing, and there's almost 200 pages of it this time around.
"My Continued Conversation With the TV" is exactly that, a conversation between a man (assumedly) and his television, beginning after 3 a.m. Hmm, after 3 a.m. - not much great material on at that time of the day, right?
"You are out of sorts. Relax, Sit back, for Godsake, you're leaning forward as if you might launch yourself at me. Quite holding those controls like a weapon. Put it down. Put your controls down.
Now, look, how about soft porn?
Everything but the erection.
There. There now.
That's not bad. That's ---"
And so it goes - infomercials, jokes about reality TV, more soft porn and so on. Having been up at that time of night/morning clicking my way through station after station, I could completely envision this conversation, were my TV ever one to decide to talk.
