Last night's event at Green Brain Comics was the 12th consecutive month that we've brought artists from four different areas of the art world--poetry, prose, music, and a visual art--to Dearborn. Over that time we've had 47 artists grace the Brain Candy "stage" with their work and presence and they've all been really great.
We've tried our best to diversify things as much as possible--prose writers of novels, stories, and non-fiction; varying styles of poets; music from singer/songwriters, an electronic musician, a rapper; and probably the area with the largest array of variance--visual arts where we've had painters, a photographer, an artist that re-appropriates items in fantastic ways, those that creates work through stitching, some comic book artists, ink drawings, as well as one making prints created from horrifying sexually charged messages. We can't thank these 47 artists enough for sharing their work, and their stories, with us this past year.
We also need to recognize Dan and Katie from Green Brain Comics for numerous things:
--opening their space up to this idea
--tweaking and tweaking to make the room as warm and receptive and efficiently used as possible month after month
--making sure there's water available for the artists or attendees
--livestreaming the events to Facebook for those that cannot attend (like the host a couple of times)
--the wonderful store that offers so much in the way of community, in its message of inclusivity, in their passion for what they're doing, and for being two extremely nice people
The last year has been a blast and we're currently booked fully with artists through December and have some slotted for January and February 2020 already so it looks like we'll be around for some time to come.
