The
Sept/Oct Poets & Writers hit the stands yesterday and many EWN
members have made some sort of news:
The
News and Trends section has articles written by members:
Martin
Lammon (Arts & Letters), who participated in the February literary journal
editor e-panel, wrote One Editor’s Take on Clean Competition, and Timothy
Schaffert, whose debut novel, The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters was published
a couple of years back by BlueHen Books and will see his new one out in October
(The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God) from Unbridled Books, interviews new
Paris Review Editor Philip Gourevitch.
Literary
Magnet focuses on Failbetter, the literary journal that just participated in
the July literary journal editor e-panel.
A
big section on Independent Publishers brings up Clear Cut Press and their
recent publishing of Charles D’Ambrosio’s collection of essays: Orphans. A nice section on David R. Godine Publishing has some nice quotes from
EWN favorite David Huddle.
An
article titled Paperback Originals is written by Quinn Dalton, whose novel High
Strung was reviewed in 2003. She also
participated in the first EWN Live
Chat E-Panel – Emerging Southern Women Writers and Bloggers Discuss … Labels,
this past March. In her article, she
mentions three titles recently reviewed (with author interviews): Aaron Gwyn’s Dog on the Cross, Sam Lipsyte’s
Home Land, John McManus’ Bitter Milk, plus one high up on my TBR pile from Marc
Estrin (The Education of Arnold Hitler).
There
is a pullout called a Submission Tracker that has some quotes pulled from prior
articles and three of them have EWN ties: Rattawut Lapcharoensap, whose Sightseeing was reviewed back in January; Whitney
Pastorek (Pindeldyboz) who participated in the March literary journal editor
e-panel; and Rusty Barnes (Night Train) who was in the May version.
Lastly,
in the awards section, Aaron Hamburger was named the fiction winner in the Rome
Prize Fellowship in Literature (the second EWN’er in the past three years to
have done so), Ted Kooser was named the 2005 Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award
winner for his Delights & Shadows, Mary Troy won the SIUC Devil’s Kitchen
Reading Award and John Struloeff was awarded a Stegner Fellowship in Poetry to
attend Stanford University.
Congratulations to all for the exposure and awards!
