Summer Books - Author Share Faves in the USA Today:
Dennis Lehane lists two:
•Smonk by Tom Franklin: "Franklin writes like an archangel on a crank binge. I've waited three years for his follow-up to Hell at the Breech so I'm pretty geeked up for this one."
•Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell: "Woodrell is the least-known major writer in the country right now. I don't even know what this novel's about, but I'm going to buy it the day it's published." (Aug. 7)
The only reason I've waited longer for Franklin's is that I read Breech in galley form. The only other publicist I've bugged nearly as much as the two who handle the above books is the one handling Adichie's new one over at Knopf.
I've listened to a chapter of Smonk via Verb. And I've read both it and Winter's Bone, both in single sittings and it nearly hurts to not review these titles right now. Do NOT miss them. Go order them now from your favorite store or online venue. While you're at it, pick up their back catalogue and begin emailing Lehane and asking him what else to read - if he's suggesting winners like these two authors and titles, he must have another one or two I want to find out about.
