Mary Miller's short story, My Old Lady, can be found in Storyglossia 18, posted online a week or so ago. As usual, editor Steven J. McDermott finds some excellent material to publish and this time around is no different. Miller, who also has stories recently seen in elimae, pindeldyboz, and Barrelhouse among others, turns in a fine story just over a page in length.
She starts things off with a bang (for readers of the full story, truly, no pun intended):
"Denis called his fiancee my old lady. Growing up, his mother dated bikers.
Denis' fiancee was in Panama City with her girlfriends, in celebration of her upcoming nuptials, while the two fo us were in his bed, landlocked and naked."
This story is like a slightly less gritty Elizabeth Ellen story, and fans of her work might want to bounce over to this issue of Storyglossia, as they've published two of Miller's works. The couple in the bed are former lovers, enjoying what may, or may not, be a final tryst before Denis marries. Miller aptly catches the inner workings of the mind of a woman knowing she's helping a man cheat on his fiancee, and the fact that they have a past only enhances some of the actions the two of them take.
It's a great story!
