So, a week or so ago, I'm blown away by Steve Erickson's writing - this week it's by his editing. Black Clock 7 is a damn good issue, and if it's representative of the first 6, I've been missing out.
Course, it only took me about five pieces to realize that the photo on the cover, of covers of Lolita, Marques de Sade, Henry Miller's Under the Roofs of Parts, panties, a bra, and the open condom wrapper and apparently used condom itself, was indeed representative of the theme of the issue. There is sex, and a great deal of it, in each piece I've read so far.
I originally grabbed the issue because of back to back stories from John Haskell and Brian Evenson (whose story starts out "In retrospect, it was easy for her to see it had been a mistake to have sex with a mime.") Then the first piece, a poem by Arielle Greenberg, featured lines from Entourage's Ari Gold - what's not to love there, right?
Since then, I've also enjoyed pieces from Lynn Tillman, Matias Viegener, Aimee Bender and Seth Greenland, and have not read a piece yet that felt forced or false.
I'll definitely pick this up. I've been a fan of Black Clock for a while, but drifted away from it after the first couple of issues.
