Aaron Burch? What literary journal is that? I can't put anything past you, the wise duo that reads the EWN Blog daily.
Aaron Burch is obviously not a new literary journal, though he is the founder, reader, editor, designer, etc. extraordinaire for Hobart, my favorite literary journal. He is also a damn fine writer, a statement you may verify at your own whim as he currently has three new pieces in some of the finer online journals around: Monkeybicycle, Storyglossia, and elimae!
Overcast - a flash piece at elimae, is what we've come to expect as readers of Burch's writing - in a mere 12 lines he's able to convey completely the intent of the piece; it dabbles with a male/female relationship; and at least once it caused me to smile.
Christmas Would be in December - a longer piece for Mr. Burch over at Monkeybicycle - seven whole paragraphs! It's a very well written, especially in the logic of the piece, story. A couple of time I thought I had him, the word "please" used in a spot I didn't think it should have been, until I re-read an earlier paragraph and realized just how sly Burch had been.
Here, Not Here, Here - the latest Storyglossia has this effort from Aaron and it's, holy choose your own expletive, over 1100 words long? By Aaron Burch? Seriously? Yes, seriously, and it's great to see Aaron expand his range and do so with such a wonderful effort. This story of a couple redefining itself, a man searching for his own place, both in the relationship and outside of it, and how Burch rolls their situations and an awful stench into the kind of story that you finish, scroll back to the top and read it again.
It's slowly becoming obvious to me, something that should have been clear much earlier. The Milwaukee Writers Festival has invited me to come in March to be part of a panel or two, along with Aaron Burch, in hopes that I'd drive and keep him fresh and ready for the Festival, as his name will be the one they put above the MWF on the posters.
