Tuesday should see piles of Sung J. Woo's debut novel, Everything Asian (2009, Thomas Dunne Books), in bookstores as it hits its publishing date. I've not read the whole thing yet, but can say that I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it enough to be pretty sure I'll have it finished up before that pub date hits.
The story of the first year (at age 12) of a young Korean's life in America, starting at the point where he's been in America for about one month, as he, his 15 year old sister, and mother have come across to join his father some five years after his own trip to start up their new life. David Kim doesn't speak English, is coming to learn that his father might just be a loser, and nobody else in the family is happy.
All that said, there have been some genuinely funny moments already, and a sweet tone to the family story. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this tonight.
For a sneak peek at the first chapter, read this broadsheet that Sung put together and has been handing out at bookstores!
